British High Commission hosts reception to honor Bangladesh's Commonwealth Games athletes


Dhaka:
The British High Commission in Dhaka on July 14 hosted a send-off reception for
Bangladeshi athletes who will represent the country at the Commonwealth Games
2026 in Glasgow, Scotland, later this month.
Hosted
by British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke, the event celebrated the dedication
and achievements of the athletes while wishing them success as they prepare to
compete on one of the Commonwealth's biggest sporting stages, read a press
release.
Bangladesh
will participate in four disciplines at the games — athletics, boxing, artistic
gymnastics, and swimming.
The
reception also underscored the longstanding partnership between the United
Kingdom and Bangladesh and highlighted the shared values of the modern
Commonwealth, including fairness, respect, and opportunity.
The
United Kingdom is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the third time since 2014,
with Glasgow once again serving as the host city, reflecting the UK's continued
commitment to the Commonwealth and the role of sport in fostering unity and
positive change.
The
event was attended by senior government officials, representatives of the
Bangladesh Olympic Association, heads of mission from various high commissions
in Dhaka, as well as sports and media personalities.
Addressing
the gathering, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said the Commonwealth
Games bring together a diverse family of nations connected by shared values.
"The
Commonwealth Games are something truly special. They bring together a diverse
family of nations — connected by shared values of fairness, respect, and
opportunity."
Wishing
the Bangladeshi contingent success, she added, "As this fantastic group of
athletes from Bangladesh departs for Glasgow in a few days, I wish them the
very best."
