Bangladesh calls for stronger global cooperation on safe migration

Dhaka: Bangladesh has called for stronger global cooperation to protect migrant rights, curb irregular migration, reduce migration costs, ensure fair wages, strengthen accountability, and expand migrants’ access to justice at a United Nations forum in New York.

Speaking at the general debate of the International Migration Review Forum held at the United Nations headquarters, Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Chowdhury said Bangladesh is enhancing accountability and ensuring justice for migrants through a “whole-of-government and whole-of-society” approach.

The minister said Bangladesh has formed a Migration Compact Taskforce and adopted a National Action Plan for 2026–2030 as part of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration to ensure safe, orderly, and regular migration.

Highlighting Bangladesh’s progress, he noted that seven out of the country’s 10 commitments made during the first IMRF have already been implemented. Bangladesh has also submitted six new commitments and joined two regional initiatives on migration governance.

Referring to climate change as an increasingly significant driver of migration, the minister urged the international community to provide reliable financing and technical support for climate-vulnerable countries.

He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to working closely with international partners to promote safe migration and sustainable development worldwide.
